long bio:

Eve Bernfeld is a writer, theatre artist, teacher and mother, based in Portland, OR. Born and raised in Jackson Hole, WY, her eclectic arts career began at age three, when she dictated her first novel (Devil World) to her Mom, who scribbled it down on used envelopes from her purse. That year Eve was also bit by the theatre bug, when she was cast as a bat in a Missoula Children's Theatre production of Snow White. At age 12, she became a founding member of a children's dance company and she spent her teenage summers studying at Interlochen Arts Camp, Ballet West and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. She also wrote a regular column ("Evesdropping") for the Jackson Hole Guide and had work published in Northern Lights Magazine.

Eve attended Fordham College at Lincoln Center in New York, where she double majored in Theatre Performance and Philosophy, readying herself for a career of "thinking about acting" (as her dad put it). After graduation, she worked for the New Victory Theater, studied singing at the Singer's Forum, performed Cabaret at Don't Tell Mama and was a member of a playwrighting group called "big chunk."

Returning to Wyoming, Eve helped found Riot Act Theatre, before swerving back east again to earn a Master's in Theatre Education from Emerson College in Boston. She then threw herself into teaching drama, first as Education Director for Off Square Theatre Company and then as a teaching artist at schools, theatres and community centers in three states. She also had many opportunities to act in and direct plays during this period and was a member of Out of Thin Air improv comedy group.

Life then took Eve to Chicago, where she studied improv at Second City, Annoyance Theatre and the both-sadly-defunct iO and Redmoon Theatre. There she discovered the Alexander Technique, which she followed to Portland, OR, to spend three years training to become a certified teacher at the Oregon Center for the Alexander Technique. Eve taught and performed with many theatres in Portland, including Shaking the Tree, Broadway Rose, Action/Adventure and the Portland Playhouse, before giving birth to triplets and stepping away from late night rehearsals. Now she focuses her teaching on Alexander Technique.

Most recently, Eve completed her MFA in Applied Theatre from Emerson College and was an Art/Lab Contemporary Jewish Fellow. She has published essays and poetry in Howlround Theatre Commons, Cathexis Northwest Press and AmSAT Journal and is finally seriously pursuing her childhood dream of writing magical novels for children. She sings, dances and acts in her kitchen and her synagogue's Purim Schpiel.
